I have not seen much of the daytona testing but have tried to follow it on the computer. Found this article on racingone.com and thought it was a bit disturbing to see the #28 on the track running the red numbers but without texaco / havoline as sponsor. I have had a year to get used to JPM in the #42 yexaco car and just can't seem to do it, as I personaly feel that JPM is an ass and should be rounded up with the rest of his open wheel buddies and sent packing back to a racing series where the cars only have one lug nut and the race commentators have an accent and the fans apreciate that type of errogance. The old #28 was always one of my favorite looking cars on the track,...anyway here is the article.

No. 28 Back on the Track

The No. 28 made its return to NASCAR Sprint Cup racing on Monday at Daytona.I’ll admit it was great to see the number back on the track, but it wasn’t great to see the car without a sponsor. In fact, currently the Yates Hauler is done up in white with the Yates Racing logo and the car is running sponsoryates.com on the quarter panels.Travis Kvapil also made his return to the Cup Series today and one of his test cars (pictured) is running the red numbers just like when the car had Texaco/Havoline as a sponsor. The No. 28 has posted 76 victories in Cup competition with the last coming with Ricky Rudd in 2002 (Infineon) when he drove for Robert Yates. Yates has posted 26 overall victories with the No. 28 with drivers Rudd, Ernie Irvan, Dale Jarrett and Davey Allison.

Good points there Ricky, I have a difficult time seeing the #28 being sponsorless for the Daytona race but I do wonder if Yates will be able to lock in a sponsor for a long term deal with Travis Kvapil driving.Maybe they will end up with multiple part time sponsors or something like that. Speaking of Travis, wasn't he supposed to drive the #88 after Rudd retired? last I heard teamate David Gilliland was having sponsor trouble as well. It is hard to keep up with all the changes durring silly season sometimes,.......guess we'll find out when the green flag drops.

As for the open wheel guys coming over, I agree, send them packing.  I like them in THEIR sport, but not so much over here.  As for the 28 and no sponsor.  I think that is the begining of the end for the Yates team.  Look what happened to the Morgan-McClure team.  They closed their doors!  They won two 500's in a row and had killer cars for years.  Then one bad break after another and loss of the BIG sponsors dwindled them down.  Yates may take a while to beat down, but they are getting beat down.  They have had moments over the last couple of years, and a Championship or two.  But, when they show up with "sponsoryates.com on the car, that can't be good!  We need the 28 and we need Yates, but they are in an uphill fight.  Good luck Yates and I hope to see that top sponsor on February.
