Wow! What a weekend in California. Having experienced rain issues in Kansas this year, I am feeling very bad for the fans who had to deal with the marathon that was the Auto Club 500. With the top 35 rule, qualifying is huge for the teams on the outside. It seems unfair that after making a trip across the US, that NASCAR can just say, "Sorry for the trouble, but we'll see ya later." It seems like the top 35 could be lined up based on points and then the go-or-go-home teams could have an abreviated qualifying session when the track is dried out. That would at least give them all an equal chance. The system in place makes it very difficult for lower tier teams to justify a race weekend, and if the weather can ruin it, that makes it almost impossible. Just an idea!
When it seemed like we were finally going to see some racing, more problems came up. Couldn't this have been forseen; as NASCAR says they have seen the "weeping" at other tracks. They should have called a caution every 10 laps or so to check on it, until they were sure it wouldn't be a problem. It seems really poor that Hamlin, Earnhart, Mears, etc. were all taken out of contention because of poor planning by NASCAR. These guys could have all been contenders last weekend. I know that anything can happen and that most of it is out of the control of the race team, but having the track completely dry before racing is under NASCAR's control. This could cost them the gains they have made in viewers over speedweeks. P>
As for the Ultimate NASCAR Challenge, I came in 4th this week, moving into the top ten in the standings. It is still hard to pick drivers as the major players are still looking for consistency. You can check out the Auto Club 500 results or take a look at the overall UNC Standings if you like. It looks to be a good season.
That's all for now! Remember; What Happens in Vegas - Stays in Vegas!
